‘All signs point to’ Patriots promoting DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, per report

It appears the Patriots have found their next defensive coordinator in DeMarcus Covington.

“All signs point to” New England promoting Covington from defensive line coach, according to the Monday Morning Quarterback’s Albert Breer.

Breer on Saturday wrote the news should be official next week, and that New England has already called other candidates to tell them they’re out.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that Covington, 34, impressed on the interview circuit last year and was set to do so again. Instead, New England has opted to keep him home.

Covington, who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and played wide receiver at Samford University, will be the team’s first official defensive coordinator since 2017 – the same year he joined the franchise.
