Simmons Diagnosed with Sprained Thumb, Avoided Fracture

Monday, August 3

"Our medical people are calling it a sprain," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez told Mark Bowman of MLB.com. "There is no timetable. We're on top of it. We'll get him some ice and treatment and see how quickly we can get him back on the field."

Per Bowman's report, X-rays came back negative for a fracture, an excellent sign for the shortstop, though he was still feeling soreness Sunday morning, and it remains a possibility that an MRI will reveal ligament damage.
